The Ford Edge

A history-making model for Ford Motor Company, the Ford Edge was first introduced with the model year 2007. It was unique in the fact that it was the first crossover manufactured by Ford. The Edge is situated above the Escape and below the Explorer in the product line for the company.

The name comes from a trim package that was used with the Ford Ranger. The crossover is made at Ford of Canada in Ontario. The Edge made its debut in 2006 at the North American International Auto Show.

The First Generation

The first generation of the Ford Edge debuted with the SE, SEL, and SEL Plus, which would later have a name change to Limited. The Sport trim didn't debut until 2008 as a 2009 model. At the beginning, the SE was a basic model with manual air conditioning, stereo with CD player and cloth seats. The SEL was quite an upgrade with power driver seat, 6-disc CD play, leather-wrapped steering wheel and 18-inch painted aluminum wheels. Leather-trimmed seats and dual-zone climate control were standard on the SEL Plus with SYNC infotainment.

Recognition came quickly for the Ford Edge. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it a Top Safety Pick for the models built after January 2007. AAA and Parents Magazine named it as one of the Best Cars for Families in 2007 with the 3.5L Duratec 35 V6 named as one of Ward's 10 Best Engines.

The first major update came in 2010 with the 2011 model year. The Ford Edge now had a new front fascia and updated bumper as well as new wheel options. Three engines were offered for this update, including a turbocharged 2.0L.

Second Generation Ford Edge

It wasn't until 2015 that Ford revamped the Edge enough to make it the second generation model. The redesign made the Edge more aggressive with a grille similar to the Explorer, new headlights and a rearview camera. The cabin was more spacious, and the model now came with optional all-wheel drive. The versatility was expanded with a towing capacity of 3500 lbs. and a new 2.7L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engine for the Sport trim.

The second generation Edge got a facelift in 2019 with a new front grille and aluminum-alloy wheels. Drivers would enjoy the new 12-speaker B&O surround sound system. Each trim would also get the eight-speed automatic transmission, which had been newly designed. With this update, the Sport trim would be replaced by the ST and come with a 2.7L EcoBoost twin turbo V6 engine. The interior and some exterior features would be unique to the model.

For the 2020 Ford Edge, a 2.7L V6 turbocharged EcoBoost engine provides up to 335 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque for a thrilling ride. This model comes with Ford Co-Pilot360, which is an array of safety features. This system includes some of the most innovative technologies in existence, such as lane keeping, pre-collision assist and adaptive cruise control.

From the beginning, the Ford Edge has attracted attention from buyers and critics alike. Boasting innovative technology, advanced safety and premium performance, the crossover continues to wow. You can find first- and second-generation Edge models at The Bear Lot.
